CBT Resources for Low Mood in Children

Low mood is one of the most common mental health difficulties experienced by children and young people. Older adolescents are more commonly affected than children.

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is a NICE-recommended treatment for depression in children and young people (NICE NG134, 2019).

Brief Behavioural Activation (Reynolds & Pass, 2021) is often the treatment of choice in primary care settings for addressing mild to moderate low mood difficulties.

CBT Hub’s resources are specifically designed to help practitioners engage children in Behavioural Activation tasks. They include:

  • Psychoeducation worksheets to help children understand the principles of Behavioural Activation, engage in the therapeutic process, and build motivation for change
  • Values exploration activities to help children identify what matters most to them and reconnect with meaningful, rewarding activities
  • Child-friendly language, graphics and examples to make Behavioural Activation engaging and accessible
